Antonio di Benedetto fue detenido en su oficina del diario Los Andes, de Mendoza, a escasas dos horas de oficializado el último golpe militar en Argentina. Tras la cárcel y la tortura, fue liberado el 3 de septiembre de 1977 y en diciembre de ese año viajó a Europa, donde terminó por instalarse en España, país en el que permaneció hasta regresar definitivamente a su patria en 1984.Fueron casi siete años de destierro, sobre los que el escritor decidió no hablar. Pero sus colaboraciones desde Madrid, principalmente para Consulta semanal, permiten reconstruir de manera tácita esos años, a la vez que nos deparan una lectura entusiasta y a veces apasionada de los estrenos de cine y teatro, las exposiciones de arte y los libros del momento.
