About This Book

"A breathless, exhilarating crash course in the low morality of high finance" Independent

Serious Money is perhaps Caryl Churchill's most notorious play. A satirical study of the effects of the Big Bang, it premiered at the Royal Court in 1987 and transferred to the West End. Since then, it has prompted city financiers the world over to applaud and decry its presentation of their lives. British Telecom refused to provide telephones for the Wyndham's production, writing to say that "This is a production with which no public company would wish to be associated".

This student edition contains a chronology of the playwright's life and work; an introduction giving the background to the play, a discussion of the various interpretations and notes on individual words and phrases in the text.

SERIOUS
MONEY
The
play's
lasting
quality
is
assured
by
the
mature
satirical
stance
of
the
dramatist.
This
is
not
merely
a
topical
swipe
at
Yuppie
fashion
(as
some
foreign
reviewers
claimed).
There
is
no
suggestion
that
the
new
breed
of
City
dealers
are
any
worse
than
their
predecessors:
GRIMES.
We're
only
doing
just
the
same
All
you
bastards
always
done.
New
Faces
in
your
old
square
mile,
Making
money
with
a
smile,
Just
as
clever,
just
as
vile.
(p.
88)
As
Michael
Billington
recognised,
the
play
'attacks
the
City's
greed
and
fear
with
zest
rather
than
self-righteousness'
(Guardian).
Serious
Money
is
indeed
topical,
showing
aspects
of
Britain
immediately
after
Big
Bang
and
the
Guinness
scandal;
it
contributes
distinctively
to
the
political
theatre
of
the
1980s,
making
its
own
telling
judgement
on
the
ethics
of
Thatcherism.
But
it
also
remains
fresh,
and
it
has
a
continuing
relevance
as
a
satire
on
greed
and
the
ruthless
workings
of
a
financial
centre.
