El Diccionario de la Real Academia Española (DRAE), en su más reciente edición1, define epónimo (del gr. ????????): "1. adj. Se dice del nombre de una persona o de un lugar que designa un pueblo, una época, una enfermedad, una unidad, etc." Este "etcétera" implica que los epónimos no sólo se aplican a enfermedades y síndromes, sino también a signos, síntomas, reacciones fisiológicas, tratamientos, intervenciones quirúrgicas, maniobras diagnósticas, posiciones, instrumental médico, términos anatómicos, reactivos, análisis, microorganismos y anticuerpos, entre otros. Sin embargo, aun con este contenido ampliado, en medicina es todavía más extenso.
