La perífrasis Revolución Francesa alude usualmente al período entre 1789 y 1799, pero este lapso no coincide con su momento específicamente revolucionario. Existe una primera secuencia de reacciones sistémicas desde 1789 hasta mediados de 1791, y una última, también de fuerzas reactivas, desde mediados de 1794 hasta 1796. Entre una y otra pueden distinguirse una etapa de rebelión sin revolución, entre mediados de 1791 y mayo de 1793, de rebelión con revolución, entre junio y diciembre de 1793, y, por último, de revolución sin rebelión, entre enero y mediados de 1794. Este trabajo indaga la trama política que las distingue, no para intervenir en el debate historiográfico sino para poner a prueba algunas categorías y presuposiciones expuestas en La cuestión del tiempo en la teoría política (volúmenes 1-5; Prometeo Libros, Buenos Aires, 2010-2014), en busca de los principios de una democracia revolucionaria que tuvo influencia universal y que proporcionó desde entonces el patrón de los movimientos de cambio radicalizado.
