A seu interlocutor, Klaus Eichmann, primogênito de Adolf — caçado, julgado e condenado à forca por Israel no início dos anos 1960 —, o filósofo judeu Günther Anders esclarece que não quer remexer o passado, mas falar do futuro: "é necessário buscar aquelas raízes que não se extinguiram após o colapso do sistema do terror de Hitler e de seu pai". Seu maior pesadelo é a repetição da monstruosidade, que para ele é resultado do avanço frenético da técnica e da incapacidade do ser humano de sequer imaginar a magnitude do poder de destruição que desenvolveu.
