A era do Antropoceno é marcada por diversas transformações tecnológicas, políticas, econômicas e principalmente ambientais, desde a Revolução Industrial e a invenção da máquina a vapor, fazendo com que a exploração dos recursos naturais em alta escala trouxesse inúmeros danos ambientais. Dessarte, dentre as atividades potencialmente poluidoras e utilizadoras de recursos ambientais, se encontra o garimpo ilegal de minérios, do qual a degradação ambiental e a injustiça social se tornam aliadas. Sendo assim, o objetivo desta obra foi analisar a utilização do mercúrio nos garimpos e os malefícios ambientais e sociais, em especial, aos povos indígenas. Ademais, cumpre salientar que a degradação ao meio ambiente advinda do garimpo pode trazer danos aos demais grupos sociais, seja na contaminação dos rios e peixes pelo mercúrio ou pelos prejuízos econômicos, sociais e ambientais transfronteiriços, inclusive para as gerações futuras.
