O Movimento da Matemática Moderna (MMM) foi um dos principais movimentos internacionais de renovação do ensino de Matemática ocorrido entre os finais da década de 1950 até finais da década de 1970. Dentro desse contexto, em 1960 os professores Osvaldo Sangiorgi e Lafayette de Morais foram enviados aos EUA para um estágio no período de julho a agosto de 1960, por meio de uma Bolsa da Pan American Union e National Science Foundation. Sangiorgi vai para Kansas University, e Lafayette de Moraes a Nova York, para a Fourdan University. Cada um deles, a sua maneira, contribuiu para a divulgação e disseminação do MMM nos meios educacionais brasileiros.O professor Lafayette de Moraes, ao retornar do seu estágio nos EUA, o faz, trazendo os livros didáticos de Matemática do School Mathematics Study Group, objeto e tema principal deste livro. Junto à professora Lydia Lamparelli empreende um trabalho de tradução/adaptação de tais livros para o currículo do curso colegial (atual ensino médio).
