Der Vater von Vital Nsengiyumva wird 1994 im Genozid in Ruanda getötet, der Mörder kam aus der Nachbarschaft. Vitals Mutter war traumatisiert, setzte aber alles daran, dass die Familie überlebte. Der Abstieg vom gehobenen Mittelstand hin in die Armut folgte in kürzester Zeit. Trotzdem absolvierten sieben der neun Geschwister später ein Universitätsstudium und die gesamte Familie fand wieder zu einem guten Leben zurück. Die Versöhnung mit dem Mörder war für die Familie ein langer Prozess, bei dem der Glaube eine zentrale Rolle spielte.Vital war Patenkind bei Compassion, lebt heute mit seiner Familie in Stuttgart und engagiert sich ehrenamtlich in dem Verein.
