Im Vorfeld und im Verlauf der Revolution von 1848/49 nahmen politische Emanzipationsbestrebungen an Fahrt auf. Dazu gehörte die Arbeiterbewegung. Dies betrifft nicht nur den von Karl Marx und Friedrich Engels geprĂ€gten Teil um den Bund der Kommunisten, der auf den Umsturz der Eigentums- und aller anderen gesellschaftlichen VerhĂ€ltnisse setzte. Ein anderer Teil war die von Stefan Born 1848 ins Leben gerufene Allgemeine Deutsche ArbeiterverbrĂŒderung, kurz ArbeiterverbrĂŒderung genannt. Sie reprĂ€sentierte den mehr reformerischen, einerseits auf Interessenausgleich mit den Kapitalisten gerichteten Zweig der Arbeiterbewegung. Andererseits orientierte sie auf verschiedene Formen der Selbsthilfe der ihr angeschlossenen Vereine. Der am 16. Oktober 1848 gegrĂŒndete erste Arbeiterverein der Stadt Halle an der Saale trat wenige Tage nach seiner Entstehung der ArbeiterverbrĂŒderung bei. Ihm gehörten neben Proletariern zahlreiche Handwerksgesellen an. Sie riefen unter dem Dach ihres Vereins mehrere Selbsthilfeprojekte ins Leben. Die Aufnahme auch von Frauen war zu der damaligen Zeit nicht selbstverstĂ€ndlich. Soweit es die Quellenlage zulieĂ, wurde ihre Teilnahme am Verein herausgearbeitet. Im Zuge der Restauration in den Jahren nach der Revolution wurde der hallesche Arbeiterverein 1850, zwei Jahre nach seiner Entstehung, verboten.
