El Grupo de Trabajo CLACSO "Ciudadanía, organizaciones populares y representación" llevó a cabo su primera reunión con el auspicio del Colegio de México en la capital azteca entre el 3 de mayo y el 3 de junio de 2010. En asociación con el grupo de investigación "Las Nuevas Formas Políticas" de la Universidad de Buenos Aires, se realizó un segundo encuentro en la capital argentina a fines de octubre del mismo año, con la invitación a participar del mismo a investigadores locales. Este libro es el resultado de presentaciones inicialmente preparadas para esas reuniones que contaron con los auspicios mencionados y con el apoyo del Instituto Federal Electoral de México; el Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas (CONICET); la Agencia Nacional de Promoción Científica y Tecnológica (ANPCyT); el servicio cultural de la Embajada de Francia; la agregaduría cultural de las embajadas de Estados Unidos y Argentina; y las delegaciones para el Cono Sur y los Andes de la Cooperación Regional francesa: la realización de esas reuniones y esta publicación no habrían sido posibles sin su sostén.
