Este trabajo describe un subgénero que ha adquirido en estas últimas décadas una popularidad importante, cuyo origen remoto y confuso plantea sin embargo problemas de legado y evolución. En Argentina, ha dado lugar a invenciones muy originales, que leen desde la parodia los textos fundadores anglosajones (Tolkien…) y entre las cuales destacan, tras las cultas y tan mentadas entelequias de Borges, las de Laiseca, Gorodischer, Aira…, particularmente interesantes por su antirrealismo y sus referencias populares. En estas páginas se repasan las formas universales de la invención (mito, cuento tradicional…) y se determinan los recursos que alejan la ficción de la referencia real. Se establece también la historicidad del subgénero, especificando los nexos entre representaciones de mundos y paradigmas culturales sucesivos. Por fin, se revisa un corpus de obras que cubre, de Holmberg a Cohen, pasando por Piglia, cerca de 150 años de historia literaria argentina. Todo ello permite poner en claro, dentro de la literatura argentina y en relación con la literatura occidental, una tipología de los mundos imaginarios que comprueba la importancia de la intención americanista y del carácter híbrido, entre lo erudito y lo popular, de los textos nacionales
