Bei seiner ersten ErwĂ€hnung um 1006 war "Suainicondorf" bereits ein bedeutendes Wirtschaftszentrum. Umgeben von zahlreichen Weihern, wurde das frĂŒhere wittelsbachische und spĂ€ter pfalz-neuburgische Pflegamt im 16. Jahrhundert zusĂ€tzlich Sitz eines Fischmeisteramtes. Der viel besuchte Wallfahrtsort auf dem Kreuzberg bildete ein religiöses Zentrum des 18. Jahrhunderts. Mit dem Anschluss an die Eisenbahn 1859 und der GrĂŒndung der Tonwarenfabrik 1865 erfolgte der Schritt ins Industriezeitalter. Allerdings brachte die Rolle als bedeutender Eisenbahnknotenpunkt auch unermessliches Leid: Schwandorf gehörte am Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs zu den am meisten zerstörten StĂ€dten Deutschlands. Heute ist die Große Kreisstadt ein wichtiger Gewerbe- und Industriestandort sowie das politische und kulturelle Zentrum des gleichnamigen Landkreises.
