Este libro es el resultado de un desafío que dos historiadoras - una argentina y otra brasileña - hace algunos años, mantienen, siempre desarrollando un esfuerzo conjunto para estimular investigaciones que reflexionen acerca de la historia agraria de Latinoamérica en sus múltiples aspectos, con énfasis en los casos de Argentina y de Brasil. En esta obra, en particular, las coordinadoras reúnen, reseñan y comentan las contribuciones de distintos investigadores producto del debate mantenido en el Congreso de la Asociación Latinoamericana de Sociología Rural, realizado en Quito, Ecuador, en noviembre de 2006. Allí se intercambiaron reflexiones acerca del agro alrededor de cinco ejes temáticos: las cuestiones culturales, educacionales y las representaciones agrarias; los trabajadores rurales y sus luchas por la tierra; la temática de la violencia/criminalidad en el campo y la cuestión histórica y contemporánea del ambientalismo y la "modernización" del agro. Dichos ejes dan consistencia a las 3 secciones centrales, ordenadas cronológica y temáticamente, que componen este libro.
