En los últimos siglos se ha extendido una extraña forma de anomía o iniquidad. Una sorprendente ceguera frente al bien o el mal, metafísicos o morales. Ya en Guillermo de Ockham aparece este fenómeno. En Hobbes se manifiesta de nuevo, ya secularizado: "ninguna regla de bien y de mal puede tomarse de la naturaleza de los objetos mismos, sino del individuo […] o de la persona que lo representa". Reaparece en Locke y en Kant, ya para permanecer en una de las líneas principales del pensamiento político, jurídico y moral de Occidente: "lo bueno es lo que produce placer" (Locke) y "La paradoja [del método en el examen crítico de la razón práctica] es que el concepto de bien y mal no se define con anterioridad a la ley moral, a la cual, parecería, debería servir de fundamento. Más bien el concepto de bien y de mal debe ser definido después y por medio de la ley", que la voluntad se da a sí misma (Kant). En este libro se examinan las raíces metafísicas de este fenómeno, para mostrar la superioridad teórico-práctica de la ética clásica, cómo esta puede responder a las principales objeciones que se han opuesto y cuáles son las líneas generales de su estructura.
