A pesar de su historia de larga duración —que se confunde con la propia aparición del códex—, la encuadernación practicada en Occidente se mantuvo durante muchos siglos como un quehacer sin escritura, un conocimiento privado de lenguaje que empieza a ganar registros solamente a partir del siglo xvii. Este libro pretende caracterizar desde el punto de vista bibliológico-arqueológico los diferentes modelos técnicos que componen la historia de la encuadernación occidental y sus contextos de producción, poniendo énfasis en los modelos establecidos en torno al libro impreso a partir del siglo xv y principalmente a lo largo del siglo xix.
