About This Book

Maria Lai (Ulassai, 1919-Cardedu, 2013) si innamorò dell'arte frequentando lo studio dello scultore Francesco Ciusa. Quindi si innamorò delle parole avendo come insegnante nelle scuole dell'obbligo lo scrittore Salvatore Cambosu. Trasferitasi a Roma, studiò al liceo artistico sotto la guida di Renato Marino Mazzacurati, e in seguito a Venezia, dove all'Accademia di belle arti poté formarsi ulteriormente con Arturo Martini. Rientrata in Sardegna, Lai iniziò una carriera di altissimo livello esponendo alla Quadriennale di Roma insieme a Lucio Fontana e ad Alberto Burri, oltre che collaborando con la galleria L'Obelisco. Via via le occasioni crebbero di numero, anche a livello internazionale, ma questo non le impedì di amare sempre di più la sua terra, proponendo grandiose opere effimere che dialogavano con il paesaggio, fino a inaugurare lei stessa il Museo di Arte Contemporanea Stazione dell'arte ad Ulassai. È considerata un'artista tra le più raffinate e interessanti del secondo Novecento europeo.
