In Deutschland erinnern eine Vielfalt von Museen, Archiven und Gedenkstätten an die Geschichte. Häufigstes Thema sind die NS-Verbrechen, der Zweite Weltkrieg und die deutsche Teilung sowie deren Überwindung. Getragen werden diese für die Demokratie und Demokratieerziehung so wichtigen Institutionen von Kommunen, Land oder Bund. Ihre Wurzeln liegen aber nicht selten im bürgerschaftlichen Engagement. Die Aufsätze dieses Bands stellen einzelne dieser Erinnerungsstätten vor und geben Einblicke in deren Geschichte, Entwicklung, pädagogischen und kuratorischen Konzepte sowie deren Rezeption. Daneben wird anhand ausgewählter Persönlichkeiten und Ereignisse auch die Demokratiegeschichte als Teil der Erinnerungskultur in Deutschland thematisiert.
