En la primera parte de este segundo volumen se analiza lo que Ricoeur denomina "postulado ontológico de la referencia" (el lenguaje refiere a una realidad extralingüística) y se hace una crítica del mismo en el marco del propio pensamiento ricoeuriano. Esta crítica abreva en una pluralidad de autores, entre los que destacan Martin Heidegger y Frank R. Ankersmit. En la segunda parte se elabora un marco teórico conceptual a partir del supuesto inverso (la realidad es interna al discurso), a la luz del cual la escritura de la historia emerge precisamente como producción textual del pasado.
