Nel corso del tempo, e nell'evoluzione della sistematizzazione scientifica dei viventi, all'interno di questo raggruppamento si sono venuti a trovare differenti gruppi sistematici aventi caratteristiche congruenti come la struttura molto semplice e non differenziata in tessuti e molto spesso la capacitĂ  fotosintetica.
