Clotilde Mancini ha quarantadue anni ed è infermiera di Pronto Soccorso. Un programma televisivo la riporta bruscamente all'infanzia vissuta a Parigi, a un misterioso trasferimento a Roma ma, soprattutto, alle memorie legate alla madre che l'ha abbandonata quando era ancora una bambina. Clotilde, un nome che non ha mai sopportato, vive ancora dopo tanti anni il dolore di quell'abbandono. Un giorno in ospedale, fra i pazienti ricoverati, inaspettatamente riconosce il padre. Erano anni che i due non si vedevano. Lui appare sfasato, ma dalle sue parole, almeno in apparenza sconnesse, emergono dettagli che sconvolgono Clotilde. La donna scopre che a Parigi i genitori, per conto del governo, erano coinvolti nello smaltimento illegale delle scorie di uranio dalle miniere del Niger.
In una trama che si sviluppa come un thriller intorno a cinque personaggi femminili, ambigui e dai destini incrociati, la protagonista vive una personale ricerca della verità che viaggia fra ricostruzione cronologica degli eventi e progressiva maturazione di una nuova consapevolezza. Nello svolgimento del racconto di una vita drammatica e difficile, resa ancora più complessa dal colore della sua pelle.
