Nel Fedro, Socrate descrive se stesso come "uno che ha la malattia di ascoltare i discorsi": una particolarissima "malattia" che è poi la filosofia stessa. Socrate si propone di spiegare a Fedro, attraverso la rielaborazione di un discorso di Lisia sull'amore, come il buon uso della retorica possa guidare le anime: soltanto accostando o dividendo correttamente pensieri e concetti sarà possibile giungere ad una verità lungamente agognata. Questo è precisamente il compito della filosofia: guidare le anime, da imbrigliare come cavalli indisciplinati, verso l'amore per la conoscenza.
