A partir d'aquests fets històrics, David Diop ordeix una novel·la basada en l'existència fictícia dels diaris secrets d'Adanson, escrits durant la seva transformadora estància africana; uns diaris que va amagar durant tota la seva vida i que, un cop mort, acabaran en mans de la seva filla Aglaé.
