Gaio Valerio Catullo, massimo esponente della scuola dei "poeti nuovi" o neóteroi ispirati al greco Callimaco, nonché uno dei maggiori poeti latini, lascia una produzione poetica giunta a noi in forma di Liber, successivamente suddiviso in tre parti: le nugae, brevi carmi in metri diversi; i carmina docta d'impronta alessandrina, per la maggior parte in esametri e distici elegiaci; e gli epigrammi, brevi liriche in distici elegiaci di argomento prevalentemente erotico. Si tratta di una forma di poesia breve ed erudita, attenta al tratteggio di episodi semplici e quotidiani di evidente matrice callimachea. La versione digitale del Liber catulliano, approntata oggi da Utet e corredata da un apparato critico di pregio e dal testo latino originale, si completa dei frammenti lirici di altri poeti minori tra cui: Valerio EdÏtuo, Q.
