Se empezó a hablar de la "tercera España" en los años treinta. A continuación, con la Guerra Civil y el franquismo casi se le perdió el rastro y hasta la memoria. El sintagma volvió a emerger tímidamente en el exilio republicano y, sorprendentemente, no durante la transición a la democracia, sino a partir de los años ochenta. Desde entonces, el concepto se discute de vez en cuando sin que se definan su consistencia y su perímetro. El abanico de las posturas es muy amplio: hay quien niega su existencia o la circunscribe a un pequeño grupo de intelectuales favorables a la mediación durante la Guerra Civil, quien la identifica con la mayoría de los españoles durante aquel conflicto y quien la ve representada en la España del posfranquismo. Sin compartir el esquema obsoleto de las "dos Españas", este libro rastrea y reconstruye por primera vez el debate cultural, político e ideológico alrededor de la "tercera España": sus usos políticos, las polémicas y las razones de su olvido en momentos concretos de la historia española más reciente. No solo se muestra el esbozo de las diferentes "terceras Españas" en el debate público, periodístico y académico, sino también una perspectiva distinta a través de la cual leer el debate actual sobre algunos de los temas más controvertidos y "calientes" de la historia contemporánea española.
