Sie gehen aber auch davon aus, dass der Nachweis von Verfälschungen, Banalisierungen oder Geschichtsklitterungen als Auseinandersetzung mit geschichtskulturellen Phänomenen künftig nicht mehr ausreicht. Dies liegt vor allem daran, dass die medialen Aufbereitungen von Geschichte oft nachhaltiger wirken als die im Unterricht gelieferten Entmythologisierungen. Deshalb ist ein vertieftes Verständnis des Umgangs mit Geschichte in der Öffentlichkeit notwendig, für das der Band Grundlagen liefert.
