Ausgehend von Richard Wagners Bühnenweihfestspiel "Parsifal" er-fuhr der Grals- und Parzivalmythos eine zunehmende Ideologisierung. Völkische, lebensreformerische, okkultistische, neuheidnische und jugendbewegte Gruppierungen instrumentalisierten den Mythos, wie die Studie für die erste Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts nachweist. Sichtbar wird dabei die Suche nach einer alternativen, explizit völkischen Religiosität. Die Entwürfe arteigener Religiosität im Zeichen des Grals müssen vor dem Hintergrund einer durch Industrialisierung und Technisierung bedingten allgemeinen Sinn- und Modernisierungskrise verstanden werden. Überdies ist die völkische Religiosität in den viel größeren Kontext religiöser Fundamentalismen einzuordnen, die dem christlichen Fundamentalismus nordamerikanischer Provenienz strukturverwandt sind.
