Mit der Dienstleistungsarbeit ging ein Versprechen auf Wohlstand, Aufstiegsmöglichkeiten und soziale Teilhabe einher; sie gilt bis heute als relativ herrschaftsarm, weil sie große Autonomiespielräume für die Beschäftigten zu bieten scheint.Diese Versprechen haben sich für die "einfachen" Dienstleistungen - Verkauf im Einzelhandel, pflegende Tätigkeiten, Post- und Paketdienste, Reinigungs- und andere Serviceaufgaben - zweifellos nicht erfüllt. Geringe Löhne, Konkurrenzdruck, rare oder fehlende Aufstiegsmöglichkeiten und Arbeitsisolation prägen das Segment "einfacher" Dienstleistungen. Die Hoffnung auf autonome Entfaltungsspielräume hat sich verflüchtigt, Hierarchie und Herrschaft entwickeln sich unter Bedingungen harten Rationalisierungsdrucks.Anhand von umfangreichen Beobachtungen und Interviews mit Beschäftigten der "einfachen" Dienstleistungsarbeit zeigt Philipp Staab auf, dass die Frage nach Proletarisierung in unserer Gesellschaft mit dem Verschwinden der Industriearbeit nicht obsolet geworden ist. Es ist eine neue Form einer postindustriellen "Proletarität" entstanden, die Arbeits- und Lebensführung gleichermaßen prägt. Somit ist der entscheidende Ort der Produktion und Verfestigung von Ungleichheit gerade dort auszumachen, wo er gemessen an gesellschaftlichen Hoffnungen nicht mehr sein sollte: am Rand der Dienstleistungsgesellschaft.
