In diesen Jahrzehnten wurde Demokratie zur Normalität, zur umfassenden Regierungs- und Lebensform, deren Ablösung undenkbar schien. Und diese Entwicklung fand in vielen, vor allem in europäischen Gesellschaften gleichzeitig statt.Historikerinnen und Historiker aus zahlreichen europäischen Ländern und aus Amerika befassen sich in diesem Band mit Kernfragen der vergleichenden Demokratieforschung: mit der gesellschaftlichen Akzeptanz der Demokratie, der Vielfalt ihrer Ausdrucksformen in Politik und Alltagsleben oder der Ausbildung eines dauerhaften demokratischen Erwartungshorizonts. Sie gehen der Frage nach, wie die Demokratie selbstverständlich wurde und es auch in existenziellen Krisen blieb - und warum sie dennoch in einigen Fällen zerstört wurde. In der Zusammenschau werden die transnationalen Gemeinsamkeiten und Gleichzeitigkeiten sichtbar, aber auch die durch die nationalen Kontexte bedingten Unterschiede.Deutlich zeigt sich mit der Normalität zugleich das Brüchige dieser Ordnung, die Notwendigkeit, demokratische Grundlagen immer wieder aufs Neue zu sichern; Demokratie ist stets doppelgesichtig, geprägt sowohl von Instabilität und Stabilität, von Fragilität und Kreativität. Wenn heute die Fragilität der Demokratie wieder in den politischen Horizont rückt und von "gefährlichen Zeiten" für die Demokratie die Rede ist - dann bietet der Blick zurück in die Epoche, in der die Demokratie zur Normalität wurde, aber diese Normalität nicht ohne Fragilität zu denken war, erstaunliche Erkenntnisse auch für die heutige Zeit.
