Am 17. Januar 1950 wurde im Neuen Deutschland die Auflösung von Lagern bekannt gegeben, die es offiziell gar nicht gab: die Speziallager des sowjetischen Geheimdienstes. Schätzungsweise 154 000 Deutsche waren seit 1945 in der SBZ und frühen DDR unter Bedingungen gefangen gehalten worden, die ein Drittel von ihnen nicht überlebte. Die Geschichte dieser Verfolgung ist bis heute weitgehend unbekannt, obwohl sie in einzigartiger Weise für die Verquickung deutscher Täter- und Opferschaft steht. Warum der Terror der frühen Nachkriegszeit verdrängt wird und wieso die deutsche Öffentlichkeit sich mit diesem Kapitel ihrer Geschichte noch immer schwertut, ist auch Thema dieses Buches.
