Es macht auf Ungereimtheiten, mögliche Irrtümer und vor allem auf Defizite bei der Anlage und Planung von Politikunterricht aufmerksam. Nach Max Weber bedeutet Politik "ein starkes langsames Bohren von harten Brettern mit Leidenschaft und Augenmaß zugleich". Die Didaktik der politischen Bildung ist vor allem auf, Augenmaß' ausgerichtet und hat darüber, Leidenschaft' aus dem Blick verloren. Ohne, Leidenschaft' jedoch können Heranwachsende nur schwer zu einer Grundhaltung finden, die eine wichtige Voraussetzung für die Wahrnehmung der Bürgerrolle in der Demokratie bildet. Das Buch unterbreitet Vorschläge, wie im Unterricht "Augenmaß und Leidenschaft' inhaltlich miteinander verbunden werden können. Diese neuen Überlegungen sowie die Didaktik des Politikunterrichts ganz allgemein gestalten die Planung und Durchführung von Politikunterricht nicht eben einfach. Sie werden daher zum Schluss des Buches anhand eines Gedichts von Heinrich Heine ("Doktrin") relativiert, um die Leserinnen und Leser nicht zu entmutigen, sondern mit Schwung zu einem eigenständigen, die Jugendlichen aufweckenden Unterricht zu erfüllen.
