Según sus editores alemanes, «en la biografía teológico-eclesial de Bonhoeffer, la «Ética» significa el intento de concretar en una concepción teológica fuertemente asentada en la realidad los conocimientos y experiencias que había adquirido» en los difíciles y crueles años de la guerra.
