L'objectif de cet opus est de promouvoir un ouvrage méthodologique de premier ordre sur la phytosociologie sigmatiste, Éléments de sociologie végétale de Jules Pavillard, originellement publié en 1935. Cet ouvrage reste aujourd'hui insuffisamment connu et usité, alors qu'il est fondé sur des concepts et des principes modernes utiles aux phytosociologues de terrain. La réédition de cet ouvrage, coédité par le professeur Franco Pedrotti de l'université de Camerino (Italie) et la Société française de phytosociologie, a pour objectif de promouvoir sa diffusion et son utilisation à destination d'un public d'étudiants, de chercheurs, de techniciens et de gestionnaires d'espaces naturels.Jules Pavillard (1868-1961) est un botaniste français. Après sa thèse sur le phytoplancton de l'étang de Thau (1905), il devient professeur à l'université de Montpellier. Il contribue avec Josias Braun-Blanquet, dès la naissance de la phytosociologie, à préciser les concepts et le vocabulaire de cette nouvelle science. Il est l'auteur de deux ouvrages essentiels: Vocabulaire de sociologie végétale (1922), co-signé avec J. Braun-Blanquet, et Éléments de sociologie végétale (1935).
