La scelta di esaminare 'The White Man's Burden' (1899) di Rudyard Kipling nasce dal desiderio di esplicitarne le coordinate testuali ed extratestuali originarie e, di conseguenza, chiarire le discrepanze culturali con cui alcune di esse sono state presentate dalla critica, talora, come si vedrà, anche in prospettive pregiudiziali.
Lo studio si apre con una breve nota sull'occasione e il contesto di composizione del testo; seguono l'originale inglese ed una proposta di traduzione in italiano corredata da un apparato di note critiche.
