Un convegno per conoscere le grammatiche europee del passato e del presente, cogliendone le differenze ma anche i comuni processi di sviluppo: è con questi propositi che sono state organizzate le due giornate dedicate alla storia della grammatica in Europa, tenutesi all'Università Cattolica l'11 e il 12 settembre 2003.
L'incontro è stato il punto di arrivo e il momento di sintesi della ricerca svolta in un biennio presso quattro atenei: Università Cattolica di Milano (Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia), San Raffaele di Milano (Facoltà di Psicologia), Università di Verona (Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia e Facoltà di Lingue e Letterature straniere), Università del Piemonte Orientale "A. Avogadro" (Facoltà di Lettere e Filosofia). Cinque i gruppi locali di studio che hanno realizzato un vero e proprio percorso storico della grammatica dai testi greci e latini sino ai nostri giorni. I contributi presentati durante le due giornate milanesi sono stati approfondimenti della storia delle grammatiche delle più importanti lingue europee antiche e moderne. In sintesi si può dire che studiare la grammatica significa partire dalla lingua e riflettere sulla lingua per giungere, anche attraverso le strutture grammaticali, ad analizzare e a comprendere la cultura e le relazioni umane nella loro complessità.
