Alcune opere trattano dell'uniformologia di tali milizie mentre il presente testo, frutto di rigorose ricerche d'archivio e bibliografiche documentate, tratta organicamente delle unità, degli uomini e degli eventi che caratterizzarono le truppe svizzere in oltre centoventi anni di servizio presso la corona borbonica di Napoli. L'analisi storica fa così emergere eventi di particolare dedizione delle milizie svizzere nella difesa della dinastia negli anni 1848-49 come anche della loro defaiance su finire del regno, negli anni 1859-60, ponendo termine alla diffusa retorica circa una supposta loro maggior valentia rispetto all'Esercito nazionale che invece si batté senza tregua in un generale contesto estremamente difficile e senza speranze.
