Mary Shelley (seconda moglie del poeta Percy Bysshe Shelley) scrisse nel 1918 il famosissimo romanzo "gotico" Frankenstein, nel quale si narra la terrificante vicenda di un giovane studente idealista che crea un gigante da cadaveri umani e vi infonde l'alito della vita, per poi rendersi conto delle terribili conseguenze delle azioni del "mostro" da lui creato.
