Sobborghi di Benin City, Nigeria: una giovanissima ragazza partorisce sul pavimento in terra battuta di una casa con una sola stanza, adibita a negozio di fortuna. Accanto a lei, due sorelle più giovani e la mamma, che le grida in faccia tutto il suo disprezzo.
Non potendo sostentare la bimba, in un clima familiare invivibile, la giovane decide di partire per l'Europa grazie all'aiuto di una potente matriarca, organizzatrice di un enorme traffico di esseri umani, a cui dovrà restituire i soldi per il debito contratto.
Lungo il tragitto farà nuove amicizie e toccherà con mano innumerevoli orrori, tra i quali la prigionia in Libia e l'incontro con una giovane agonizzante che contribuirà a strappare alla morte. Il gruppo si separerà per affrontare la traversata del Mediterraneo e coloro che riusciranno a farcela si ritroveranno a Castel Volturno, dove affronteranno altre atrocità, fra cui la costrizione alla prostituzione. Ciò nonostante, qualcuna tra loro arriverà alle soglie di un nuovo, benevolo destino.
