Entre 1800 et 1914, plus de deux mille architectes suisses quittent leur pays pour se former dans les grandes écoles allemandes, trois cents autres seulement préférant alors Paris. L'Allemagne a ainsi constitué un centre architectural majeur pour les constructeurs suisses, mais cette influence demeure aujourd'hui aussi méconnue qu'inexplorée. Dave Lüthi a retrouvé la trace d'un millier de ces architectes en formation, dont plus d'un quart de Romands, dans les archives des grandes écoles d'architecture de Munich, Stuttgart, Carlsruhe et Berlin. Il interroge au travers de ce livre la diffusion de l'architecture allemande en Suisse, un transfert culturel à la signification particulière en cette période de constitution du jeune État fédéral. Au fil de pages richement illustrées de nombreuses images d'archives en grande partie inédites, ce n'est rien de moins qu'une toute nouvelle histoire de l'architecture suisse du XIX e siècle qui se fait jour.
