Det gjaldt for gårdmanden Jeppe Espersen og hans familie, der mistede både hjem og levebrød, da godsejeren fik landsbyens jord opmålt og fordelt på en ny og mere rationel måde. Dermed kom familien til at stå på den forkerte side af den gabende kløft, der åbnede sig mellem taberne og vinderne af kampen om jorden. For mænd og kvinder, der ejede jord, var reformerne en succes uden sidestykke, men fra de jordløses perspektiv så det anderledes ud.
