I samtiden var N.F.S. Grundtvig (1783-1872) og J.P. Mynster (1775-1854) anerkendt som kirkens helt store personligheder. De to lÌrde folk var fÌtre, men deres forhold var ikke ligefrem prÌget af varme familiefølelser. De talte ikke gerne med hinanden, men til gengÌld gerne om hinanden. Deres temperamenter var som nat og dag, og deres synspunkter slog tit gnister: Grundtvig ønskede frihed i kirken for alle troende, Mynster krÌvede orden og afskyede al pietisme. Grundtvig slog til lyd for prÌstens frie ret til kirketugt ved nadverbordet, Mynster afviste den pure. Grundtvig gik ind for religionsfrihed, Mynster undtog baptisterne.
