På den dansk-vestindiske ø Sankt Jan var vold, sult og hårdt arbejde hverdagskost for de slavebundne mænd og kvinder. En novemberdag i 1733 slog de tilbage: Bevæbnet med sukkerknive snød 12-14 mænd sig ind på de danske soldaters fort og indledte et blodigt slaveoprør, der skulle blive et af de længste i Caribien. Måneders guerillakrig endte med et tragisk kollektivt selvmord, der nok afsluttede kampene, men som stadig mindes på øerne i dag. Selv om magthaverne vandt til sidst, fik oprøret kolossal betydning. Det er fortællingen om savn og overlevelsesdrift, tro og identitet, sammenhold og konflikt – og ikke mindst indgroet racisme hos en usentimental kolonimagt.
