Sammenlignet med maleriet var den billig og hurtig, og fotografiet var så detaljeret, at folk mente, at det viste virkeligheden selv. Men verden er ikke sort og hvid. Den står heller ikke stille, og fotografen har til alle tider sat sit eget præg på billedet. Ikke desto mindre himlede mange op over, at det objektive gik tabt, da digitale kameraer vandt frem i 1990'erne. I dag er vi skeptiske, når vi fodres med fiktive billeder skabt ved hjælp af kunstig intelligens.
