Este livro é resultado de uma pesquisa que visou analisar o desenvolvimento do pensamento teórico em processos de significação gerados por estudantes do quinto ano do Ensino Fundamental em uma situação desencadeadora de aprendizagem dos números racionais e do conceito de medida, intitulada "A viagem e o amigo misterioso". Com base nos pressupostos do materialismo histórico-dialético e na teoria histórico-cultural, realizou-se uma pesquisa exploratória, a fim de investigar os sentidos e significados que os estudantes explicitam em sua atividade. A análise dos dados se deu a partir da constituição de núcleos de significação, que explicitam os nexos conceituais do número racional e da medida, bem como as evidências do desenvolvimento da autonomia dos estudantes. A pesquisa propiciou maior aproximação entre os conhecimentos acadêmicos e a práxis escolar, além da ressignificação da prática docente e a autonomia intelectual dos estudantes, por meio do desenvolvimento do raciocínio e da argumentação matemática.
