È uno dei principali strumenti finanziari tramite il quale lo Stato Italiano finanzia il proprio debito pubblico nel lungo termine, assieme ai CCT, titoli che hanno scadenza massima a 7 anni e cedola a tasso variabile. Oltre ai classici BTP con durate 3, 5, 7, 10, 15, 20, 30 e 50 anni, e i CCT con durate di 7 anni, esistono altre tipologie di BTP e CCT:
