En effet, l'invocation puis l'étude des Empires berbères servit à caractériser un grand Autre de proximité: le Maghreb à la fois si proche et pourtant si différent. Étudier ce passé revenait donc à donner des perspectives à cette différence radicale. Dans le cadre du Maghreb colonisé puis nouvellement indépendant, ce passé pourtant lointain ne cessa plus de servir de référence et d'être inséré à un roman national qui ambitionnait de donner une assise solide à ces États.
