La protagonista del libro è Zoé Gatti de Gamond (1806-1854), pedagogista e scrittrice politica, franco-belga, è stata una seguace critica di Fourier, del tutto sconosciuta in Italia; poco studiata anche dalla letteratura utopica, si è impegnata personalmente, trasferendosi con il marito, il pittore Jean-Baptiste Gatti e le due figlie nell'Abbazia di Citeaux, uno dei primi esperimenti fourieristi, investendo anche parte dei suoi beni.
Non sarà mai una discepola acritica: diffonde il pensiero del maestro Fourier, esaltandone le novità, ma rilevandone anche i lati deboli, soprattutto in merito alla cosiddetta liberazione sessuale femminile.
