Il 15 settembre 1947, alle ore 17.00, il vice prefetto di Nizza Bourguet, accompagnato da alcuni funzionari e da un reggimento di gendarmes, incontrò i rappresentanti della neo nata Repubblica Italiana al posto di confine di Fontan per dare finalmente il via all'inesorabile passaggio di consegne. Esattamente sette ore dopo i comuni di Tenda e Briga Marittima, ribattezzati subito Tende e La Brigue, diventarono parte integrante della IV Repubblica francese. Si trattava in fin dei conti di un territorio limitato se rapportato al destino del confine orientale italiano ma esso lasciò comunque strascichi importanti. Questo evento fu infatti vissuto come un'ingiustizia, o peggio ancora, come una vendetta perpetrata ingiustamente dai cugini francesi, anche se era stata proprio l'Italia, nel giugno 1940, ad infliggere il famoso "coup de poignard dans le dos" ad una Francia falciata dall'esercito tedesco.
