Il libro analizza il faticoso processo di realizzazione dei nuovi cimiteri extraurbani in etĂ  napoleonica, che impose un modello giunto fino ai nostri giorni. Non si tratta di uno studio sui cimiteri di rilevanza architettonica o artistica, ma su quelli numerosi e spogli di borghi, villaggi e cittĂ  appartenenti al Regno d'Italia con l'obiettivo di comprendere come le autoritĂ  napoleoniche abbiano affrontato, e in gran parte risolto, l'annoso problema sanitario delle sepolture all'interno e nei pressi delle chiese, superando molteplici resistenze di ordine finanziario e culturale.Attraverso la ricostruzione di questo processo di modernizzazione si puĂČ cogliere la delicata e complessa interazione tra la societĂ  "italiana" e lo Stato post cetuale napoleonico, che decise di non delegare piĂč la gestione amministrativa e sanitaria della morte, avocando totalmente a sĂ© quel compito.
