Com suas funções sociocomunicativas, cognitivas, interativas e institucionais, os gêneros textuais apresentam-se de maneira bastante diversificada nos mais variados campos que compõem a sociedade. A esses campos ou ambientes sociais em que são produzidos e utilizados os gêneros textuais chamamos de domínios discursivos. Um desses domínios discursivos bastante presente no cotidiano social é a religião nas suas diversas manifestações. Dentre as religiões que se destacam no atual contexto social, está o Cristianismo em sua versão católica romana. Várias expressões da comunicação social remetem direta ou indiretamente ao domínio discursivo do cristianismo católico romano. O Cristianismo católico tem suas raízes em tradições milenares, e investigá-lo remete-nos a um vasto universo de gêneros e hipergêneros significativos para a reconstituição e o entendimento da história da humanidade. Conhecer as origens, constituições e funções de alguns gêneros textuais utilizados pelo Cristianismo aprofunda a compreensão das estruturas e origens da própria comunicação social.
