Versailles, 18. Januar 1871: Im Spiegelsaal des berühmten Schlosses der französischen Könige wird das deutsche Kaiserreich ausgerufen. Seine Entwicklung war geprägt von immenser wirtschaftlicher Dynamik bei weitgehendem politischem Stillstand, demokratischen Lernprozessen und autoritärer Verkrustung, bahnbrechenden Sozialreformen und heftigsten sozialen Konflikten. In zwölf Kapiteln, die jeweils von den Ereignissen eines bestimmten Tages ausgehen, beleuchtet Christoph Nonn diese faszinierend bunte Epoche und lässt die Menschen lebendig werden, die sie gestalteten und durchlebten. So etwa der Künstler Anton von Werner, der die Kaiserproklamation gleich mehrfach malte, Julie Bebel, die selbstbewusst in der Politik wie in der gemeinsamen Drechslerwerkstatt an die Stelle ihres Manns August trat, wenn der wieder einmal im Gefängnis saß, oder der Schuster Wilhelm Voigt, der als «Hauptmann von Köpenick» eine Stadt zum Narren hielt und damit eine Nation zum Lachen brachte.
